Munich is the city where a bartender can become a legend. Charles Schumann has stood behind his bar by the Hofgarten since 1982, and the city has grown used to cocktails being taken seriously here: no straws, no rush, no phone on the counter.
A second scene has grown alongside: Zephyr and Bar Gabányi in Glockenbach and Isarvorstadt, the Goldene Bar in the Haus der Kunst, the Ory Bar in the Mandarin Oriental. And with the Blitz Club on the Museum Island, Munich has had a techno club since 2017 that keeps pace with Berlin without copying it.
The Munich night is shorter than Berlin's and more expensive, but reliably well dressed. Start the evening in the English Garden, continue at Schumann's and end at Blitz, and you have understood the city.

Tips for Munich.
- Schumann's takes no reservations: come around 8 pm on a weekday or after 11 pm when the kitchen closes.
- Photos are banned in the Blitz Club, which makes the night better.
- After 1 am the tram night lines run, the underground only at weekends.
- In summer the Isar is the biggest bar in town: bottled beer, friends, a blanket.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a reservation at Schumann's?
No, there are none. Come early or during the week and you get a seat. Friday and Saturday after 10 pm gets tight.
Is the Blitz Club hard to get into?
Less strict than Berlin, but there is a door. If you come for the music and respect the photo ban, you are welcome.
What does a cocktail cost in Munich?
In the top bars 15 to 19 euros, in hotel bars from 18 euros. A Helles in the beer garden is 5 to 6 euros.
