Hamburg

Hamburg has the Kiez, the harbour and one of the best bars in the world. Between Le Lion and the Golden Pudel Club lies only a short taxi ride, but a whole world.

Night Index 78 · 9 bars, clubs and beach clubs

Hamburg drinks with attitude. The city has Le Lion, the bar where the Gin Basil Smash was invented in 2008, and the Reeperbahn, the strip that has not calmed down since the Beatles. In between lie Eppendorf highball bars, rooftops with a harbour view and a beach on the Elbe where you watch container ships glide past with a beer in your hand.

St. Pauli is more than the Große Freiheit. Avoid the main street and turn into the side alleys and you find the bars that make Hamburg: the Golden Pudel Club on Hafenstraße, the Kleines Phi on Feldstraße, the bunker with Uebel & Gefährlich.

The best Hamburg evening begins by the water, moves to a bar with a doorbell and ends on the Kiez. And if you get up early, you go on to the fish market.

Good to know

Tips for Hamburg.

  • Le Lion has a doorbell and no reservations for walk-ins, so come early (from 7 pm) or during the week.
  • The Strandperle is closed in rain and full in sun; the riverbank beside it is free.
  • From the Kiez to the city centre it is a 25-minute walk along the Elbe, one of the most beautiful routes in town at night.
  • Sunday morning at the fish market is part of a Hamburg night.

Frequently asked questions

Which bar in Hamburg is a must?

Le Lion. The bar invented the Gin Basil Smash, is dark, quiet and one of the best in Europe. Ring, wait, walk in.

Is the Reeperbahn still good for a night out?

Yes, if you treat the Große Freiheit as scenery and drink in the side streets: Hafenstraße, Hein-Hoyer-Straße, Feldstraße.

When is the fish market open?

Sundays from 5 to 9.30 am in summer, from 7 am in winter.
