Spain · The island that invented the sunset
Ibiza
Ibiza is where club culture became a world religion. From sunset at Café del Mar to Monday morning at DC-10, every hour is taken.
Ibiza has organised the night in stages. Beach club in the afternoon, sunset in Sant Antoni at 9 pm, dinner at midnight, club at 2 am, breakfast on the beach at 7 am. The clubs are the biggest and most expensive in the world: Pacha with the cherries since 1973, Hï and Ushuaïa in Playa d'en Bossa, Amnesia with the ice cannon, DC-10 next to the runway.
But Ibiza is quiet too: Experimental Beach on the salt flats, Sunset Ashram above Cala Comte, Bar 1805 in Dalt Vila with absinthe cocktails and the walk through the old town at night. If you only see the clubs, you miss the island that makes the clubs possible.
The season runs from May to October; opening and closing parties mark the beginning and end. Buy tickets in advance, taxis are scarce, and the sun always rises again, however long the night was.

White, light, expensive-looking. At DC-10 anything, at Pacha and Lío the entrance counts, on the beach nothing counts.

Tips for Ibiza.
- Buy club tickets online; at the door they are 20 to 30 percent more expensive or sold out.
- Water costs 10 to 15 euros in the club, a drink 20 to 25 euros. Set your budget beforehand.
- Taxis are scarce in high season; the Discobus runs between the clubs, a hire car only without alcohol.
- Sunset in Sant Antoni: come early, the places on the wall are taken from 7 pm.
