Beneath the streets of Edinburgh lie 500 whiskies that Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker selects and rotates herself. From this collection Johnnie Walker has composed its first permanent prestige whisky.
Every great whisky brand eventually wants to show what it can do when it draws on everything it has. Johnnie Walker is now doing so for good. With Johnnie Walker Vault, the brand that describes itself as the world’s leading Scotch whisky launches a new blended Scotch that it sees as its ultimate expression of the blender’s art. It is the brand’s first prestige whisky that is not meant as a limited episode but as a permanent part of the range.
An atelier beneath Edinburgh
The name comes from a place most visitors to Edinburgh never get to see. Deep beneath the streets of the city, at The Johnnie Walker Experience, lies the brand’s creative atelier, the Vault. At any given time it holds 500 whiskies from Diageo’s rare and so-called ghost stocks, whiskies from distilleries that have closed. Dr. Emma Walker curates this selection personally and keeps rotating it. It is her way of showing what lies in the more than ten million casks of Scotch available to her as Master Blender.

Old and young Brora in one bottle
For the new blend, Emma Walker has combined legendary single malts from ghost distilleries with contemporary malts that nobody has tasted before. Brora sits at the centre. A highly aged Brora, filled into cask before the distillery closed in 1983, meets young Brora from casks filled only after the distillery’s revival following decades of silence. This is the first time ever that the younger Brora has been used. A single glass thus tells of the past and the future of the same distillery.
Walker herself sees the result as a tribute to the country she calls home. “Johnnie Walker Vault is what I’ve called my love letter to Scotland,” says the Master Blender. According to the brand, each note has been chosen to reflect places, memories and moments, with aromas meant to recall the Highlands as much as the North Sea.

How Vault tastes
The house’s tasting notes read like a journey through Scotland. On the nose come butterscotch and salted caramel first, then wildflowers, green hills and fragrant barley, later toasted oak and a hint of a driftwood bonfire. The palate brings vanilla, chopped almonds, frangipane and Scottish raspberries, then tropical fruit against a backdrop of incense and charred oak, before malty sweetness slowly fades into leather and tobacco. The finish stays structured, with apricot, sweet raspberry, a touch of crème anglaise and gently warming spice.
Where to find Vault
Johnnie Walker Vault has been on sale since 14 October 2026, and only in three places: at Harrods in London, at The Johnnie Walker Experience in Edinburgh and online via justerinis.com, each at a recommended retail price of £1,100 per bottle.

What it means at the bar
A whisky in this price range does not belong in a shaker. Whoever gets to taste it drinks it neat, takes time and lets it breathe in the glass. For everyday drinking at the bar there is the familiar range of the house, with Red Label, Blonde, Black Label, Double Black, Green Label, Gold Label Reserve, Aged 18 Years and Blue Label, which according to the brand is enjoyed in more than 180 countries and sells over 19 million cases a year. If you prefer your whisky stirred, practise with our recipe for the Old Fashioned. And where a special whisky is served at its best is the subject of our piece on hotel bars.
